Car GPS navigation systems can be notoriously difficult to buy. Oh, sure there are plenty of places to buy them from–your local office supply store, Target, Wal-Mart, and a dozen or so online stores and websites. It’s not the actual purchasing that’s the problem. It’s knowing what to purchase! That’s the issue.

First off, You need to know who makes these things.

Although there are a number of different GPS manufacturers, I would stick with the top three, in the United States, that is. The top companies in the U. S. are Garmin, Tom Tom, and Magellan. Together they represent about 90% of the U. S. market.

All three of these companies make great products, although if you’re looking for a state of the art, cutting edge device (and if you’re willing to pay for it), then Garmin is the only company you need to consider.

Once you know the big manufacturers, you need to have an idea of what features you want and how much they’re going to cost.

All GPS navigation systems do the same thing: They tell you where you are and give you instructions on how to get to where you’re going.

You can buy a basic system that will do all of this plus a few more things for $120 to $150.

Good choices might be the Magellan RoadMate 1200, which sells for only $120, or the Tom Tom One, 3rd Edition, which has more features and sells for only about $150!

There are many more features, however, that car GPS navigation systems come with. Features like Bluetooth, real-time traffic and weather, more extensive maps, actually being able to hear your GPS through your car’s stereo system, and multiple point routing (which lets you enter more than one destination at a time), are really great to have!

You can get a GPS that can do everything I’ve mentioned for only about $350! Garmin probably makes the best one, the nuvi 760, which was voted by Consumer Reports recently as the best overall car GPS navigation system.

Of course, Tom Tom and Magellan make very competitive devices. I especially like the Magellan Maestro 4250. It has a wide screen and can do everything above except the multiple point routing. Best thing about the Maestro is it only costs around $250.

At the high end of the car GPS navigation spectrum is the Garmin nuvi 880. It costs a cool $900, but it’s truly state of the art, and worth every penny–if that’s in your budget.

To find the best GPS for car use, you have to understand a little about the market. Specifically, you need to know who makes the best GPS systems, what their features are and how much that’s going to cost. Then you can choose the best GPS for your needs and budget.

In the United States, there are three manufacturers of GPS systems you need to focus on–Garmin, Tom Tom, and Magellan. Garmin is without doubt the industry leader, selling around half of the GPS devices sold. Tom Tom and Magellan each sell about 20%. So, these three companies represent about 90% of the total U. S. market.

Although there are several other companies that make GPS’s, I would look no further than these three.

Buying a GPS is a little difficult, sometimes.

Even if you focus on just these three manufacturers there’s still a ton of models to choose from. Also, GPS devices all have features that normally you might not have considered important, like what they call FM transmission–the ability of your GPS to send it’s sound through your car’s stereo system.

I’ve been reviewing GPS systems for quite a while, and I’ve written several hundred reviews. One thing that seems to help people is to divide the marketplace into three areas, entry-level, mid-range, and high-end. Within each of these divisions, it’s easier to say which unit is actually the best GPS for car use.

So, let’s talk about each of these market segments in order, starting with the entry-level market.

Best GPS for Car, Entry-Level

In a short, 500 word, article it’s impossible to give the GPS marketplace a complete treatment. So at each price point, I’m going to mention one of two GPS’s that I really like and give you an indication of why. You can then continue your own research online on a good website.

There are four entry-level devices I like. The Garmin nuvi’s 200 and 350. The Tom Tom One, 3rd Edition, and the Magellan Maestro 3100.

The nuvi 200, One, 3rd Edition, and the Maestro 3100 all sell for about $150. Of these three, the Tom Tom One, 3rd Edition offers the most features for the money. The nuvi 350 is slighly higher at $200, but it has a lot of features only found in more expensive devices, like traffic alerts and actually saying street names when it tells you where to turn.

Personally, of these four, I would go with either the Tom Tom One, 3rd Edition or the nuvi 350 according to how much money you want to spend.

Best GPS for Car, Mid-Range

Again, Magellan, Tom Tom, and Garmin all have good products. At the lower end of the mid-range, I would probably go with the Magellan Maestro 4250. It only sells for about $250 and has a ton of features including AAA’s famous Tour Guide right on the device.

Tom Tom’s GO line offers some good products, like the GO 920T, but frankly I think they’re a little overpriced.

If you’re willing to spend $300 or so, then you’ll want to check out Garmin’s nuvi 760. The nuvi 760 has Bluetooth and multiple point routing, among a host of other features. It’s currently selling for just under $350. That’s a lot of GPS for the money.

Best GPS for Car, High-End

The high end of the market belongs to Garmin. And their best product is the state-of-the-art Garmin nuvi 880. What can’t the 880 do? It will cost you a cool $900, but if you’re looking for cutting edge technology, you’ve found it!

Tom Tom GPS began in 1991 as Palmtop, a business to develop applications for the first handheld computers. In this article “Price Comparison GPS, Garmin, Magellan, and Tom Tom,” I’m going to talk about what you can get from these three manufacturers and approximately how much it’s going to cost you.

I’m also focusing exclusively on after-market, automotive GPS receivers-not the kind you take hiking, but the kind you see mounted on people’s dashboards. To get started, let’s talk about GPS systems in general first, so you understand what they do, what their basic features are, and what additional features you can upgrade to.

What GPS Systems Do

GPS systems (or receivers) are electronic devices that show you where you are on an electronic map and tell you how to get where you want to go via some sort of voice instructions.

All GPS receivers also have a database of Points of Interest (POIs). These are pre-programmed locations of gas stations, restaurants, state parks, hospitals, well-known buildings, etc. Basically these are public destinations.

GPS receivers also all come with the following:

* A touch screen interface
* A choice of “views”-either 2d, which looks just like a map, or 3d, which looks a little more realistic
* All of these devices auto-calculate your route to your destination. Usually you can choose between shortest or fastest route
* Come pre-loaded with maps. Even most of the base price units have maps of the lower 48 states

Upgrades

Popular upgrades are:

* A wider screen, 4.3 inches diagonally as opposed to 3.5 inches
* Saying the names of the streets, instead of just saying “turn here.”
* More maps
* Bluetooth integration for hands-free calling
* Real-time traffic and weather
* Millions of POIs, instead of a few hundred thousand
* Multiple route calculation

Price Comparison GPS

GPS systems range in price from around $150 for base units to $1,000 for Garmin’s top of the line Street Pilot 7000. You can get a lot of bells and whistles for $200 to $300.

Magellan’s Maestro line currently runs anywhere from about $150 for the Maestro 3100, which has a 3.5 inch screen, maps of the lower 48 states, and about 750,000 POIs. The top of the line Maestro, the 4250, currently runs slightly more than $250. With the 4250, you get a 4.3-inch screen, maps of the U. S. and Canada, 6 million POIs, real-time traffic capability and Bluetooth.

Garmin’s GPS receivers are comparatively priced. Their introductory model, the Nuvi 200 does about the same thing as the Maestro 3100, and runs about the same amount of money. Their top of the line Nuvi 770 currently costs slightly less than $600, but it has every feature imaginable-4.3-inch screen, more maps, huge POI database, says street names, real-time traffic and weather, Bluetooth, and much, much more.

The other main manufacturer, Tom Tom, has fewer models to choose from, but they make a great product and their prices are in line with Magellan’s and Garmin’s. Their base model, the Tom Tom One, runs slightly more than $150. Their top of the line model, the GO 920 has a 4.3-inch screen and all of the other features.

Is the Garmin car GPS the best model to buy? Or should you go with Tom Tom? Opinion seems divided between the two makers, even though Garmin out sells Tom Tom over 2 to 1.

To help you decide between the two, I’m going to compare the Garmin car GPS with Tom Tom. Hopefully, this will give you a little help on deciding which company and which of their models is right for you.

Garmin Car GPS

Garmin sells 50% of the GPS devices sold in the United States. (To be fair, in Europe Tom Tom is the industry leader.)

There’s a reason for Garmin’s dominance of the U. S. market. They simply have more models to choose from at more price points.

I’m not going to discuss every single Garmin model in this article. But I will mention a few that I like at various prices.

In the entry-level market, you have the Garmin nuvi 200 and the nuvi 350. The nuvi 200 is a true entry-level device. It can do everything a GPS is supposed to (tell you where you are and show you how to get to where you’re going), but it doesn’t have many features beyond that.

The nuvi 200 currently runs about $150.

The nuvi 350, on the other hand, has a few great features like maps of the whole United States and Canada. It also can receive traffic and weather alerts (with subscription). At only $200, that’s a lot of GPS for the money!

In the middle of the market, Garmin has the incredible nuvi 760, which sells for just under $350. The 760 has a wider screen than either the nuvi 200 or the nuvi 350. It also has Bluetooth capability, traffic and weather alerts, and it can route it’s sound through your car’s stereo system. It also does multiple point routing, which means you can enter more than one destination in at a time.

Consumer Reports called the nuvi 760 the best overall GPS on the market, recently. I happen to agree.

At the high end of the market, there’s the nuvi 880. It can do everything the nuvi 760 can and also has several impressive cutting-edge features that no one else has. The nuvi 880 will set you back a cool $900, but if you’re looking for state-of-the-art, look no further!

Tom Tom

Tom Tom doesn’t really compete with Garmin at the high end of the market. Actually, no one does.

Where Tom Tom is most competitive is the low end.

Their Tom Tom One, 3rd Edition can do much more than the nuvi 200, but sells for essentially the same! If I were going to buy and entry-level unit, I would probably spring for the One, 3rd Edition.

In the middle of the market there’s the Tom Tom GO 920T, which sells for about the same as the nuvi 760 ($350). The GO 920T has Bluetooth and the wider screen. It also has Tom Tom’s own Map Share technology, which let’s users actually correct Tom Tom’s map database.

Personally, I would go with the Garmin nuvi 760, if I wanted a middle range product.

So, my comparison ends up like this: Tom Tom One, 3rd Edition for $150, the Garmin nuvi 760 for around $350, and the Garmin nuvi 880 for $900.

There’s certainly more to know about GPS devices than just this. For one, there’s the company Magellan and their fine products.

But this at least will give you a start.

If you’re looking to buy a GPS, then that might be an important question. Although Garmin currently has almost 50% of the market share in the U.S., Tom Tom is next in line with about 20%. Just so you know, Magellan is third.

Garmin certainly has a wider and deeper product line. They also have the upper end of the market pretty well sewn up. If you’re looking for an entry level device, or even a mid-priced device, then Tom Tom certainly is worth considering.

Part of the problem in choosing a GPS unit is understanding what features are offered, and which ones are important to you. Most people aren’t interested in the details of how these things work. They’re not even interested in fine differences between the two. Most people want their device to work and be reliable, and do everything they need it to do.

With that in mind, let’s talk a moment about what GPS devices do in the first place.

All GPS’s do the following:

* They show you were you are and tell you how to get where you’re going
* They have a touch screen interface
* They tell you where to turn
* They come pre-loaded with maps
* Have a pre-programmed database of Points of Interest (POI’s)

There are other standard features, but these are the main ones.

If you want to pay more, you can get the following:

* Actually telling you the street names
* Choice of a larger screen, specifically 4.3-inch
* More maps
* Bluetooth capability
* Multiple route capability
* Mp3 and audio book capability
* Larger database of POI’s

For an entry level device, a great Tom Tom GPS unit would be the Tom Tom One, 3rd. Edition. Right now, they’re selling for less than $150. The Tom Tom One, 3rd Edition does everything an entry level device needs to do, plus has some interesting features. It has real-time traffic capability (that is, it can help you avoid traffic jams), and has an interesting emergency menu feature. It also comes with free software that will let you download the latest maps, celebrity voices, and other free applications.

Garmin’s entry level GPS unit is the Garmin nuvi 200. Right now, it runs about $20 more than the Tom Tom. It can do everything a basic GPS unit needs to do, but doesn’t have some of the bells and whistles the Tom Tom has. Why does Garmin outsell Tom Tom in the United States? People perceive Garmin as the leader when it comes to quality.

For a mid-range unit, you might want to consider the Tom Tom GO 920, which is currently selling for slightly more than $300. The GO 920 does everything the One, 3rd Edition does, and also includes Bluetooth, spoken street names, a wider screen, and FM transmission capability. (FM capability means you can hear your unit though your car’s stereo system.)

The GO 920 compares to the Gamin nuvi 600’s. The Garmin nuvi 660, for instance, sells for essentially the same as the GO 920. Honestly, there’s no real difference between the two in terms of big stuff they can do, like Bluetooth or FM transmission. Again, the nuvi 660 outsells the GO 920 because people see Garmin as being the leader in quality. That’s not to say the GO 920 is not a very good device. After all Tom Tom outsells Garmin in Europe, for what that’s worth.

So how does a Tom Tom GPS unit stack up against a Garmin? Both of these companies make excellent products, and, especially in the mid-range prices, they are neck and neck as far as features and price. Tom Tom seems to offer more features at the lower price points.

So you want to buy a GPS. Choices, yes - staggering numbers as of late. So what should you do? We recommend buying Factory Remanufactured units.

So what’s the logic behind this choice?

There are many reasons, lets examine a few.

1. Price - New verses Factory Remanufactured can be as much as a 50% savings or more.

2. Warranty - New verses Factory Remanufactured? Guess what? Exactly the same at 1 year.

3. The cheaper price allows you to purchase a higher end unit with more features than some new lower end units. Think about that for a minute. You can buy a higher priced model with more features than most new lower end units. No brainer here.

4. This to me is one of the most important reasons I personally buy Factory Reconditioned units, and the reason is just how quickly these units become obsolete and are replaced with newer models with even more bells and whistles.

5. Finally, notice the large price drops on the older units the manufacturers are trying to get rid of to make way for the newer models. When you buy new and pay top dollar, your investment quickly loses its value in obsolescence and you probably have many less features than the newer models.

6. One more thing that is very important. “Theft” Leave your unit in your car even if it is locked and you return to find your unit gone and hundreds of dollars worth of damage to your car also that the thief left behind for you. One of the things I personally appreciate about the newer units is that most of them are not much bigger than a new deck of cards and they are so easy to take with you Just pop it in your top pocket and go. This will also allow you to use it while you are walking around in some unfamiliar city. This is really a great new feature.

Many of the larger wide screen models again can be purchased used and are a favorite with truckers and RV drivers who appreciate the larger easy to read screens.

In closing let me also say that many of the new units are multi functional in that you can use them in your car and just take them with you and you can also use them in your boat with the new software mapping that may be used in the same crossover type units that have just recently come out. Let us not forget the motorcycle units that are really built more ruggedly to withstand the vibration and off road uses of many motorcyclists.

So again I ask you to review these thoughts and to consider a Factory Reconditioned unit for any of the reasons above.

What is a GPS

For those that do not know what GPS actually is… in a nut shell… a tracking system created by the U.S government for spying that finally in the 80s was opened up to the public to use. It consists of three parts, satellites that orbit the Earth, Monitoring stations and the actual GPS unit.

OK now here is what I really think about them

Every time I go out of my driveway with my GPS I know that it is ready and willing to take me to my final destination, eventually. But, also at this time I start to feel the added anxiety that the GPS has created in my life. Not only do I have the daily stresses of live, I now have the GPS to add even more to it. I shutter to think how smart these GPS really are and how much they are beginning to take over many peoples lives.

Having the opportunity to almost feel like you have been given your own crystal ball and you can see into the distance. Knowing what streets are coming up gives you some kind of superpower. It makes me wonder what our forever getting lost parents were actually missing. Although some seniors do have GPS (most were given by there tech driven kids) most seniors still believe that they ‘got by before and sure don’t need any direction gizmo now’ or ‘I’m getting too old to have to learn something new’ either way both may be correct.

Can you imagine if our parents would have had GPS when we were growing up? “Pull over and ask someone” my mom would say or “look there’s a gas station! Stop!” or even better “we could have been there if you would have only stopped a half hour ago to ask someone”, all of us kids always fully agreed with mom. It might be the actual reason we would start out at the house and ask “are we there yet?” had we had GPS we could know that Dad was not just getting us lost… again.

I remember a time when my parents had purchased a new cottage about an hour and half from our home and invited all of us up there to see their new place and have Thanksgiving dinner. We headed out with the instructions given by my parents. Somehow we got lost and my now ex husband insisted that he would find the way there, even though he had never been in that area but his psychic ability would lead the way.

It unfortunately was long before GPS and cell phones existed. It took almost 8 hours and past dinner time before he would finally give in and get proper directions, ok yes I am still a little bitter about that one. More for the fact the kids in the back kept saying “are we almost there”, and he would answer ….Soon!

The best part of having a GPS is you don’t feel like you are driving alone. You actually get verbal instruction as to how to get to your destination either ‘in the shortest time, shortest distance’ or probably the most used best one most use of highways’, which one should Not consider necessarily the quickest route. If you go online you now also have new saying that can now be downloaded to your system. This could offer many interesting instructions to make your drive even better at least to humor yourself.

Putting a GPS in your car is also like having a backseat driver without the aggravation of them yelling ‘where are you going’, ‘pull over and ask how to get there’ or ‘watch for that car’… yadda, yadda. Many times I find myself yelling at the GPS, but I can actually do that knowing that I don’t have to worry about hurting its feelings.

GPS has changed my life and not necessarily for the best. The anxiety that comes from knowing that at some point in my day I am going to be faced with the impeccable, “Recalculating route! Or “When possible make a legal U Turn”. All I can say is “Not again! I was sure I turned at the right road” …but yes each and every time I venture out I know that it’s going to find out that I am semi-lost again.

Sometimes it’s not always my fault. How many times I have turned at a street before or even worse right after. The ding, ding, ding of the GPS meaning here’s your street NOW, NOW turn quick, sometimes doesn’t happen until you get right into the middle of that intersection. I have also heard it tell me to also turn before I should have. There are also many times that I am actually smarter then my GPS and know a route that it just doesn’t want to acknowledge.

It’s always good to know that your system will start talking to you when you have three miles until your turn, but that just means for the next three miles I am going to be stressed knowing that I am going to have to make a turn and possibly get lost again.

Recently we traveled to Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, I am not sure how we managed it but it was almost like our GPS was on holidays. Over and over we missed streets, went in the wrong direction and wanted to throw the unit in the Bay. I have never heard so many swear words at a piece of technology that we all still believe we now need. Somehow we even managed to get to Baltimore as I said I think the GPS was sightseeing.

Remembering the rule of quickest time, most use of freeways, shortest distance according to how birds fly are not always easy to decide which one to take. What I really wish my GPS would be able to do is read my mind, to somehow know and warn me that the directions that I put into my system were actually wrong before I headed out late the next morning.

I also wish that it would pretend that I made the right travel decision for a change when the family is in the car and not let them know that I am a GPS idiot and lost again, or if I am going to get lost I would hope that it would take me to somewhere interesting… wait that did happen, we did get to visit Baltimore.

I love when you finally reach your destination and it tells you “You have arrived!” it’s like a huge weight is finally lifted from my head, but them I realize there is still the return trip and What is going to be the shortest time now?

Yesterday I was sitting in the living room and programming the GPS trying to figure out which way I was going to go to get me to my appointment the next day. Everything was quiet and I was not moving at all when all of a sudden the GPS says out loud “Keep to the Left!” I couldn’t help but laugh hysterically with my husband as we both looked at the unit and shook our heads… I said “Now do you see the problem”. It really is not my fault the GPS has its own agenda. I then realized my GPS stood for (Getting People Somewhere!) … now where that’s another story.

Every pilot should have this GPS unit because it offers all of the capabilities and all of the software options that you might want. Of course, this is a great buy for those that are in the air, on the land, or in the sea as it is preloaded with all of the information that you could ever need including restaurants, ATM’s, and even points of interest in each area.

The 296
Of course, the 495 and the 496 are not the only available units by Garmin. Many people find that the Garmin 296 is also a great buy and is just right for their needs. This is considered a color aviation portal that has built in terrain mapping as well as terrain alerting. This is a great buy for those into aviation because the unit is capable of providing detailed views of flight routes, local topography, and obstacles in the area.

As you can see, the products by Garmin are very popular and will provide you with all of the GPS information that you need whether you are in the air, on the land, or in the sea.
